Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. Her aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse so that she could have the chance to learn about art literature or theater. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay discovered through experience the art of being a good instrument to engage in activism. DuVernay's mother also had social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself through the medium of art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and raised. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the garbage belonging to one of the jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism so she made the decision to go into the industry of public relations. DuVernay got a job right out college, as a young publicist for a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Besides PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
