Melanie Jayne Lynskey

Melanie Jayne Lynskey was born on May 16, 1977, in New Zealand. She is known for playing charming, soft-spoken but tough characters, and works predominantly in independent films. She has received a New Zealand Film Award as well as a Hollywood Film Award as well as the Sundance Special Jury Award. Lynskey's film debut was as the teenage killer in Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures (1994). After moving to the United States in 1994, Lynskey launched a successful career as a supporting actress in a variety of big-budget and smaller-scale movies, such as Ever After (1998) and Detroit Rock City and But I'm a Cherleader (both 1999), Coyote Ugly (2000), Abandon and Sweet Home Alabama (1902), Shattered Glass (2003) and Flags of Our Fathers (2006). Lynskey's lead role in the film Hello I Must Go (2012) was praised by critics and a nomination for The Gotham Award for Breakthrough Performer. It was a pivotal moment in her professional career. Subsequent lead roles in Happy Christmas, We'll Never Have Paris, Goodbye to All That (all 2014), The Intervention, Rainbow Time, Little Boxes (all 2016), I Don't Feel at In This World Anymore, And Then I Go (both 2017), Sadie (2018) and Lady of the Manor (2021) have established her as a prominent figure in the American independent film community. Lynskey is also well-known for her character of Rose on Two and a Half Men (2003-2015). She appeared on Togetherness from 2015 until in 2016. She was nominated for the 2015 Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress. She was the voice of Beatrice for the Cartoon Network's Over the Garden Wall (2014) and Megan for Disney XD's Future-Worm! (2016-2018). She was the main character in Molly Strand's debut season on Hulu (2018), and Rosemary Thomson was her role in Mrs. America (2020).

After studying improv at Chicago's Second City and Improv Olympic in the early 1990s, Poehler co-founded the improvisational-comedy troupe Upright Citizens Brigade.
